  1. The Roman Empire was one of the biggest and most successful empires of the time. It spread from Britain all the way to Constantinople and Asia Minor. The main cause of western Rome’s collapse was because of economic problems, barbarian invaders, social problems and a weak army. Economic problems arose when the gap between the poor and the rich expanded. This is never good in a society because the rich become wealthier and the poor just become poorer. At the same time wars were being fought and in that time farm land was being destroyed too, which didn’t help with the poverty crisis or with the economy problems at the time either. Barbarian invaders were also a big factor in the fall of the western empire. The most feared and skilled barbaric invaders were the Huns. These men were skilled with the horse and amazing swordsmen. They came from Asia then started moving westward. At first they only invaded small Germanic tribes, but then the Germans started to come on the border and the romans fought with them, but they sometimes lost and the Germans or Huns just got deeper into the empire and this hurt the empires prosperity. One other important factor was that the government was facing social problems. What social problems you may ask yourself? Well, one factor was the tax collectors. Some were dishonest and took extra money to support themselves and their families. Many wealthy estate owners also fled to their country of origin to escape the Roman social problems at the time. A weak army also took a big hit. Some Roman military armies were recruiting soldiers from Germany which were not loyal to Rome as the Romans were. These were some of the factors that made the Roman Empire fall.
The Romans had a very sophisticated eye and enjoyed a luxury life filled with beautiful Architecture, language and engineering. Architecture was a major role in the Roman ways of life. They built magnificent public buildings. They built public baths, temples, bridges, forums and marketplaces. The artists also made beautiful sculptures and artwork to present inside these buildings (this can be found on page 21). They also had a beautiful language, Latin. It is commonly referred to as the romance language. Spanish, French, Portuguese and Romanian all come from their Latin words of origin. English letters also come from the Roman alphabet (Pg#24). The Romans invented many things some of which are concrete, a strong material that we still use today. They also made roads for their cities and residents (pg#22). Rome had many advancements and that’s what left the civilization living on for centuries after its fall.

  2. The Roman Empire was and still is the biggest empire of all times. It spread from Britain all the way to Constantinople, know modern turkey and all the way to the Asian minor.as there empire grew it became harder to govern and soon the Western Roman Empire became weak and later fell. But some might argue that it did not fall but it just got weaker. There are many reasons why the Western Roman Empire fell; I will talk about some of the reasons why the empire fell and for what reasons.
The Roman Empire started getting weaker when a king by the name of Diocletian took power in A.D. 284 .He saw that the empire was too large to be governed by only one person so he split it into the western and eastern roman empire .He thought it would be a good solution, but later it turned to be an unwise choice and instead made the empire weaker. Another reason why the Roman Empire collapsed is because of economic and social problems. As the empire grew the rich and poor people started to stray apart and the various wars destroyed farm land and trade became harder, and as a result the poor people became even poorer and the numbers kept increasing. Meanwhile taxes became higher and tax collectors started asking for more than was needed and kept it for them. Some social problems that effected Rome is that the rich left the city to start their own self sufficient estates where they grew their own foods and hired guards to guard their homes and families, as for the poor some became tenant farmers and others became outlaws and lived a life of crime. These caused declines in cities and know people were looking for the safety of the latifundia, and this was the way of life to the European society for a long period of time. The Romans began to recruit foreign soldiers instead of Romans and as a result the army declined because they were not as loyal and as a result the army became less affective. Barbarian invasions also made the kingdom weaker .In A.D.370 (pg.18) a new group of invaders came into the lands. The Huns, they were a fierce group of people who were very good horseman and very good with a sword. The Huns came storming into Rome and the roman army tried to stop them but failed and it was the worst defeat for Rome in over 600 years.
Some contributions Rome made to the modern world is the architecture. We still use some architectural details from the Romans such as the pillars and the small details and the carvings.in engineering the Romans invented concrete and imagine what life would be like if the haven’t invented it. They built roads, arches and huge domes all made of concrete. The Romans also built a complex route for water and trenches to make water axes able for all people. They also made laws that are still used today like the all citizens had equal rights under the law. These are just some of the many contributions the Romans made to modern and ancient times.

  4. The collapse of the empire started when the barbarians started to invade the empire. This happened because they found a way to cross/enter the borders. Another reason was because of economic troubles. Rome's supplies as well as slaves and war treasures began to dry up. Rome was then split into two halves. One side was the Western Empire in the city of Milan, and the Eastern Empire in Byzantium. This made the two empires easier government wise, but then this led to them to drift apart. Rome then stretched from the Atlantic ocean to the Euphrates river. Even with Rome's excellent road systems, they were unable to communicate quickly. The government started to corrupt and The Huns started to invade Rome. This led to the Eurasian warriors to rampage through northern Europe which drove many Germanic tribes to the borders of the Roman Empire. Christianity started to spread and all Roman cultures started to fade away. This then led to the weakening of the Roman legions. They were unable to recruit as many soldiers for war, which then made the empire collapse. The lasting legacies were artifacts as well as the roads and the harbors as well as the bridges that the empire has built.

  5. No empire ever in history can compare with that of the Roman Empire. It was ahead of its time, and lived for a long time, but as each empire has its rise and fall, this one did too. During the time of the Pax Romana, there were signs of weakness because of the diversity of the people residing there that felt a bare amount of loyalty to Rome or its leader. One reason of the tragic collapse of this realm was invasion by barbarian tribes. Nomadic groups of people barged into the Empire’s territory. The Huns, the most skillful, aggressive and ferocious horsemen of the time were their main enemies. As shown page 18-19 of the textbook, many other tribes invaded Rome and set up minor kingdoms, such as the Germanic kingdoms. Another factor that lead to the subside of this entity was the weakening of Roman legions. For most of history, the Roman army was the envy of the ancient world. But during the decline, the strength of this once mighty army began to change. Unable to recruit enough Roman soldiers, emperors like Diocletian and Constantine began hiring foreign men who would later weaken the force to take a place in their legion as said on page 17. Also, there were social and economic problems such as overdependence on slaves, high taxes, population decline and other problems related to war. “The Roman empire did not die a natural death. It was murdered.” –French historian.

The Roman Empire changed history. How can an empire change ALL of history, you may wonder. You can see it displayed in our daily life. Rome spread Christianity into every corner of the know world, from Britannia to Asia Minor (western Asia) and from Germany to North Africa. This entity made Christianity a established and practiced religion, and enforced it onto its people. Along with that, Empire successfully had Latin influence on modern European languages. Many other contributions were its infrastructure, such as Hadrian's Wall (Northumberland, England) and the huge walls surrounding Constantinople. Even the concept of strong citizenship originated from the Romans. The American system of government has very much been influenced by the Roman system. Multicultural empires, and equal justice under the law are both ideas originated from Rome, as displayed on page 24. These are just some of the many uncomparable legacies left by these great and powerful Romans, but these few are what kept the empire alive until now.

  7. There are many reasons to why the Roman Empire collapsed. In section 3 in the textbook, I realized that it mostly talks about Rome's problems. There were many internal weaknesses such as, economic problems and a weaker army. With the economic problems, the rich and poor increased. With many wars, it destroyed many farms. Since the empire soon grew very large, defending its borders was very expensive, especially when the taxes got raised to help support the army. At first, Rome's army was well trained and loyal to Rome. The problem was that after the Pax Romana ended, the army started to bring foreign soldiers. Soon, those soldiers were not as loyal to Rome, and they weren’t following the orders like they used to. All of this affected Rome because it made the army a less effective fighting force. There were many invasions and threats from outside the empire. In about A.D. 370, a new horrible group of barbarians, The Huns, came attacking. Because of the barbarians, and many other groups of barbarians, this killed about 40,000 Romans.

Some contributions Rome made that are still lasting is architecture. What we use from their architecture is carvings. In engineering, the Romans created concrete, which helped them create roads, arches and huge domes. The Romans were also able to build temples, bridges, forums, and many other things. They had very creative artists who would make sculptures, and decorated Roman homes with paintings and mosaics. Rome also had a legacy of language. For example their main language was Latin. Many of the English words come from Latin. In fact, our alphabets come from the Roman alphabets. They even had laws which influenced the U.S. as it says on page 24, “Many principles of the roman republic, such as equal justice under the law, became part of the American system of the government.”As you can see, Rome has a big influence on America.

  9. The world has great and massive empires. But as we all know, every empire can always have an end. There are a few examples of empires such as the Gupta empire, Persian empire, and the main emphasis on this essay, the Roman empire.

Rome was a huge and powerful empire but it came to an abrupt end. A few reasons are listed in this paragraph. One reason of the fall of Rome is that the poor grew even poorer due to the fact that wars kept on destroying farms and trade. This affected them because the poor relied on these jobs as a source of money because of this the poor grew poorer and their amount increased quickly. Another reason why Rome fell was that tax collectors became corrupt and added on to the taxes for the army. With the extra taxes they lavishly took it for themselves and enjoyed their life.

Another reason why Rome fell was social unrest. Why was this a problem? It was a problem because wealthy people went to their estates and hired the poor to work on their farms and do chores because the poor didn't have much options. The wealthy then raised their own food and hired guards to protect them from harm.

The Roman army raised the empire but it was also a cause of the downfall. The reason is that after the Pax Romana ended the army grew weaker and recruited foreign German soldiers. These German soldiers weren't as loyal to Rome as their home country. This caused the Roman fighting force to be less effective.

Not only Rome suffered internal conflicts but they also suffered external conflicts. These external conflicts were things such as wars and barbarians. An example of barbarians are the Huns, one of the main reasons of the downfall of Rome.
The Huns destroyed peaceful Germanic tribes and advanced on to Rome. The textbook says, "In August 378, a Roman army tried but failed to stop Visigoths at the Greek town of Adrianople." This was Rome's worst defeat in 600 years, 40,000 Romans were killed. Another cause of the extinction of the Roman empire was a cruel leader named Attila. Attila took his armies deep into Gaul and Italy, there Roman troops guarding the borders were called to defend Italy. This caused hordes of invaders to invade Rome.

Rome left behind a large influence to other countries such as architecture, engineering, irrigations, aqueducts, law, citizenship, Roman law, and a legacy of language. It was also a great center of Christianity.

  10. I am typing this one last time and if it glitches again Im no gonna retype it again!

    1. Rome had many weaknesses like economy, weak army, and social problems. Rome's economy was bad because the unstoppable wars caused the farms and trade total destruction. Along with that taxes and corruptions increased severely which caused the poor to get even more poorer and the even more poorer people got even even more poorer and so on. Social problems caused the rich to leave their cities because they were scared. The poor had to become outlaws, tenant farmers or join the army. The army was another factor that led to the collapse of the empire. After a time called the Pax Romana which is a time of piece, the army started to bring foreign soldiers from germany. The soldiers were not good and they caused the aemy to weaken. Barbarians called the Huns attacked the empire which led to become weaker as well. These are some factors that led to the weakness of the western emipre.

    2. Lasting contributions were architecture, engineering and language. Romans build public baths, temples, bridges, forums, and market places. Sculptures and artists tried to make the place look prettier. Romans also invented concrete which is used by we humans of this planet today. They made roads, arches and domes out of concrte. The romans invented a language based on Latin. The language spread all over the emipre.

Romes most importsnt legacy was Christianity. Roman officals became scared that Jesus might start a Jewish rebellion. Roman authorities then persecuted christains. In the 300s a emperor named Constantine allowed the christians to worship with freedom.

That was some of thelasting contributions of Rome.

  11. Why Rome Collapsed
    • Christianity was the main reason for Rome’s downfall. Christianity was the belief of one god and Romans believed in polytheism (the worship of several gods). When an emperor called Constantine (who was Christian) took over, he made the Christianity the official religion of Rome. Since Christianity states that the god is the one you believe in, it weakened the power of the emperor. The people used to worship their emperor and treat him like god before Constantine came and established Christianity. He established a city called Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) in Eastern Rome.
    • Rome’s emperors couldn’t hire enough soldiers from their homeland, so they forced people from conquered lands to fight in the army. These soldiers were often untrained and the army became corrupt and couldn’t defend Rome from the Huns and other barbaric tribes.
    • Inflation was very common in the economy. When the Huns started attacking Rome, the peaceful tribes that were around Rome fled to the empire for refuge. The rich people who owned farms, but lived in the city fled to their farmland, doubled or tripled crop prices, and hired bodyguards to protect them.
    How Rome Still Lives On
    • They established a republic and let citizens vote for their leader. Today we have lots of countries that follow democracy (some don’t follow democracy even though they say so, like Egypt) like the USA.
    • Rome helped spread Latin, which is why we speak English today.
    • Roman literature inspired writers like Shakespeare and even the idea of putting officials on coins was their idea.

  12. Factors led to the collapse:
The Roman Empire had years of peace with all the good emperors in the Pax Romana but at the end Rome fell into chaos. The Roman Empire had such diverse cultures and ways of living that they were so different from each other and not united under one set of rules and beliefs. Wars had begun to fight for the borders which brought Rome into conflicts and no peace. With that people from outside the empire also attacked like the Huns who the Romans viewed as barbarians. All these factors at the end cased the Roman Empire to fall.
    Lasting contributions:
Even though the Roman Empire fell, it had lasting contributions that are still used know. One very important thing we use now is the way the romans way of building architecture. They built many beautiful things with pretty and unique designs. They also spread Christianity and created some ways of governing we still use today. The empire may have died but some of its contributions are still alive.

  14. There are many factors that led to the downfall of the Western Roman Empire that are listed in the Social Studies textbook Chapter 1, Section 3 on pg. 17. The first factor was economic problems. First, when the empire expanded the gap between the poor and rich increased. Also the constant war became a problem because it led to destroying farmland and that also hurt trade which caused more people to become poor. At the same time the corruption added and that caused taxes to go even higher than before. This led into the next factor which was social problems. Because of the economic problems it led to social unrest which led to the decline of the population because many people started to leave their country or city because of the fear that they would be attacked. Since the wealthy people started to leave the poor which made them even poorer. This caused the gap between wealthy and poor even greater. The third factor was because of the military. Before the Pax Romana most of the army used to be loyal Roman citizens, but after the Pax Romana the army started to recruit many foreign soldiers from Germany. Since they weren’t as loyal the foreign soldiers weakened the army and did not follow orders. Once the army became extremely weak other forces started invading Rome.
There were many lasting contributions of the Romans we still know of in Social Studies textbook Chapter 1, Section 4 on pg. 22-23. The first thing the Romans are known for is architecture. Some things that are still standing can be public baths, temples, bridges, forums, and marketplaces. The Romans were also known for engineering because the Romans invented concrete and also built roads with concrete. Eventually the empire had 50,000 miles of roads. These were built for easy transportation and army purposes. The Romans also had very modern water systems.

  15. Everything has an end. Unfortunately, the Roman Empire, as great as it was, had its downfall. As the problems began to pile up and the hole in the empire began to expand, Western Rome crumbled. The empire had several weaknesses, of which include economical, social, military, and political complications.

The miscellany of cultures, languages, and religions (Christianity) led to the disloyalty of many citizens to their emperors. According to the California Prentice Hall Medieval and Early Modern Times textbook, “Emperor Caracalla granted Roman citizenship to all free people in 212 A.D.” in order to increase loyalty and faithfulness (p.16). The expansion of citizenship created a large disparity between the wealthy and the poor due to the boundless wars that obliterated farms and weakened trade. In order to defend the empire from the several attacks, taxes increased and so did corruption. Making situations worse, Tax collectors would ask citizen’s to pay more than was needed and kept the spare money. Social problems began to start as the Roman economy worsened. The affluent people moved to country estates called latifundia. They hired guards to protect them form attacks and produced their own food. Some of the deprived citizens chose to become tenant farmers on the country estates. Others fought in the army and the rest became outlaws. The center of Rome was gone as the people left their cities to reach survival. As the central government grew weaker, so did the military. The soldiers that were told to fight weren’t as loyal as the army before them that shaped the empire. They fought indolently and consequently, the army became abortive.

Meanwhile, Rome was facing ceaseless attacks on its eastern borders that were marked as the Rhine and Danube rivers. Roman officials allowed uncivilized Germanic tribes to settle and trade along the frontier. A new group of barbarians called Huns came fleeing from Central Asia to invade Rome. Being as fierce as the Huns were, they assaulted the passive Germanic tribes and drove them in to the city to find shelter. The ghastly defeat led to deaths of about approximately 40,000 Romans due to the lack of efficiency from their army. Determinedly, the Huns kept attacking as their army reached to Italy and Gaul. The Roman army fled back to defend the borders of Italy, but made a hole at the border posts where more invaders came flocking in. By 500 A.D., the Germanic tribe, Franks forced the last Roman emperor to leave, defeated the Roman army, and ruled present day France and Belgium.

Even after the fall of Rome, it left lasting influences on modern life. The Romans created stunning architectural works such as temples, bridges, and marketplaces. Also, the Romans invented concrete and used it to build domes, arches, and roads. These roads were a significant part of Roman history because it allowed the army to move promptly from one place to another and helped spread Roman culture across the vast empire. Modern European nations found their rules on Roman law. Even the United States of America shares similar principles as the Romans such as equal justice. Languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese are called Romance languages because they are all based on Latin. Many English words originate from Latin, however it is not considered a Romance language. Finally, Rome’s most significant contribution was the spread of Christianity. Emperor Constantine helped with the spread by accepting Christians to worship freely.

  16. Some historians think that the western empire fell because of the empire's economic and social problems. They think it was because the rich contributed little to the economy. The poor got poorer and social conflict increased. Other historians think it was because of the decline of slavery. Slaves did a lot of work in the empire. Other historians think it was because of the growth of christianity. When people started to believe in christianity they had less loyalty to the empire. Modern historians think that it was because of barbarian invasions.

Some contributions Romans made are that they invented concrete. They also contributed architecture. They also contributed engineering. They contributed water supplies. I used textbook page 19-24

  17. Social causes that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire is when, fearing for their safety, wealthy people left the city to go to their country estates where they raised their own food and hired guards to protect themselves from attackers. Poor people became tenant farmers, outlaws, or even joined the army. On page 17 of the social studies text book, it says that this new way of life would shape European society for hundreds of years. Foreign soldiers recruited from Germany weakened the army by that they were not as loyal as earlier troops and they weren't willing to follow orders in the same way. Economic problems increased since wars destroyed farms and hurt trade. Corruption high taxes soon developed because of the empire expanding. The empire had ended when barbarians had invaded.
Rome has been very popular of their contributions and legacy. Public-works projects of Rome are public baths, temples, bridges, forums, and marketplaces. Rome's works are always both beautiful an practical. They also designed arches, roads, and domes of concrete. The empire had a network of more than 50,000 miles of roads. Roman engineers even built aqueducts to carry water across valleys.

  18. There were many factors that let to the fall of the Roman Empire. You might think that all the problems started after the Pax Romana, but it actually started during the Pax Romana. Since the Roman Empire was made up of so many diverse people, they each had different languages and cultures. So they felt less loyal to Rome and it's rulers. Economic problems was a major issue, as the empire expanded the poor became poorer. And to add to that the tax became higher. Corrupt tax collectors charged extra, and kept the extras for themselves. The reason for high taxes was because it was costly to protect the empires borders. That leads to another problem, the army was falling apart. They started gathering people from Germany to become soldiers. Slowly the army became less loyal, and they did not obey or follow orders. A few small but very important problems brought down the largest empire

The Romans loved luxury. Their love for luxury is a reason why we have so many luxuries today. Their artwork and their architecture were both gorgeous and useful.most of their surviving architecture were public work. The Romans built public baths, temples, bridges, forums, and marketplaces. If you look around you will see that we use all of those things today, with a modern twist. They built statues honoring gods and emperors. The Romans invented concrete, which they used to build arches, domes, and roads. Concrete is a very important building material today. They also used aqueducts, which we use today to transport water from place to place. Our government is based on the roman government. They believed that a good government was based on good rules and law. The also believed that all citizens had equal rights. The Romans spoke Latin, millions of people speak Romance which is based on Latin. And many English words come from Latin. Even though the empire has fallen, it is still alive today with its lasting legacy.

  20. Rome - the world’s greatest empire even had its ups and its downs. It was the longest lasting empire in known history. Like all other great empires, it also came to an end. However, the Roman Empire still stands out for its lasting contributions in human history.

There were many factors that led to the fall of the Roman Empire. One major problem was the decrease in the number of slaves. This was a catastrophe, because the Romans got used to a lazy and comfortable lifestyle being totally dependent on the slaves to do all the work. Another issue was the gap between the rich and the poor getting larger and larger. The rich became self-sufficient and did not care about anyone else in the society. The poor were left on the streets having no job and no means to support themselves. Some became outlaws, while others worked for the rich barely getting enough to sustain a livelihood. Reliance on foreign soldiers, who were not as loyal as the true Romans in the army, was another source of problem. This caused a huge dent in society’s loyalty to Rome. Also foreign citizens were looked at with suspicion by the Romans creating a divide in the society. Barbarians, taking opportunity of this weakness and divide, attacked Rome left and right till it lost its glory. Finally, the Huns cast the final blow to destroy the Romans, once and for all.

Although Rome died a murderous death, it had lasting contributions that shapes our government and law as of today. The Romans had a knack for art, architecture, and engineering. The Romans made many beautiful mosaics, statues, and temples. They were also able to make concrete which is the basis for buildings in the modern era. They used concrete to build roads, domes and arches to unify Rome and make life easier. Also many fundamental pillars of our constitution, such as equal rights for all citizens (barring the slaves) come from the basis upon which Roman government stood upon. The idea of a melting pot also somewhat comes from the Roman Empire. Another major area of contribution was language. Many of the languages that we see today are based on Latin, such as, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian. Although English is not directly based on Latin, the language takes many words that are from Latin and shares the same alphabet as that of Latin.

The Romans are by far, known as the largest and one of the most influential empires in human history. Although the empire came to a cruel end, the Roman way of luxurious life survives among the most affluent in western societies, to this day.

  21. Western Rome collapsed because of the barbarian tribes and the Huns who would stand at Rome's borders, also there was because of the economic problems and relying on slavery too much they were also falling from the inside and some wealthy people fled to escape the taxes, rise of eastern Rome when they split it has become harder for them to defend each other, overspending of military weapons they would spend most of there money for military tools, and finally the weakening of the empire the empire weakened because they split Rome it to Western and eastern this caused for the empire to be weak

the lasting contributions of the roman empire are the languages of Rome spread around the world English, Italian, French.Their religion spread through the empire which is Christianity. Many of there inventions can be seen today only improved like the roads.

  23. There are many reasons why the Western Roman Empire collapsed. As it says on page 16 in the Medieval and Early Modern Times (on page 17) it state that when the empire expanded, the gap between the rich and the poor increased. And the endless wars against barbarians destroyed the crops so the poor got even more poorer. Also the tax collector were collecting way more than the owe and keeping the extra for themselves.Another thing is that the army got weaker by constantly fighting, and bringing soldiers from Germany.Over time, the German soldiers weekend the army.aAlso, people from outside the Roman Empire called Barbarians were barging the through to invade at an alarming rate.(On page 18 ) it states that the barbarian and the unswore very good at riding horses. And they were pretty skilled fighters as well. They killed nearly 60,000 Romans.Aslo, on page (19),they were starting to have little kingdoms brea off making the less taxes for them to pay witch makes more debt.

The roman language really influenced modern english because the english language is originated from latin witch was there language at that time*.A lot of inventions are influenced in the world.Inventions such as arches domes roads etc have been influenced by the Roman culture.
